Big Porn Inc: Exposing the harms of the global porn industry, co-edited by myself and Abigail Bray and published by Spinifex Press, had its first official launch at Readings Books in Melbourne last Thursday.
It was a great night. Clive Hamilton, Professor of Public Ethics at the Centre for Applied Philosophy and Public Ethics, Charles Sturt University, gave a compelling address about porn’s insidious spread and impact (it will be published soon so you can see how good it was). Contributor ‘Stella’, who also has a chapter in the book, moved us with her personal story. My publishers – also contributors – Dr Renate Klein and Susan Hawthorn spoke, along with Dr Meagan Tyler and Caroline Norma, who also have chapters in the book.

The next launch is in Perth this Thursday: 1pm-2pm, Level 2 Foyer, Parliament House. I’ll be speaking, along with Abigail Bray, Renate Klein, Susan Hawthorne and another contributor Betty McLellan who wrote a significant chapter looking at free speech vs fair speech. The book will be launched by Minister for Mental Health, the Hon Helen Morton MLC and Kate Doust, MLC and Nick Goiran, MLC, will say a few words in support. It was a fantastic night. Thanks MTR and all the contributors. Stella’s story in the book is heart-rending and really drove home the reasons why it is that Big Porn is so evil. She’s such an amazing woman, and all the people who spoke are awesome. My deepest gratitude for the book, and for the ability to come and meet you all in person.
