  1. Oh of course Melinda that *must* be what you mean. Put on some house clothes, do the dishes in a film clip. That will *really* inspire sales. Just like Beyonce did just recently in ‘Why don’t you love me.’ I’m sure it’s inspired body love. Oh wait, but you want her to find real love? Oh damn but isn’t it obvious all the old school artists *must* have been on the wrong track when their lyrics expressed something more than the desire to grind up and down each other? How did they *ever* manage to sell records when it didn’t sound like live porn? *shrugs*

  2. Little Miley is all grown up now Melinda. 17 and free as the scope of entertainment. (sarcasm)

  3. Well said Melinda – the other ‘must do’ for any young female singer on the verge of ‘womanhood’ is of course the mandatory coverspread on a mens magazine.
Sometime soon, somebody in the mainstream music industry might actually come up with something truly avante gard, creative and inspiring. Now that would be shocking!!
    But instead….same old same old…BORING!!

  4. My little girl idolises Miley/Hannah, she is 10 and if Im completly honest I have no idea what to do?? She is a child a tween and this is so hard!! Give me a screaming baby in the middle of the night any day!! I dont know what to do because there is nothing that she can do/participate in that is not sexulised! Girls clothing over a size 12 is to “old” for her but smaller sizes dont fit she is too big for the wiggles but look at this, how can I let her watch images that she can not emotionally or psycologically understand?? Yes I know the lyrics of the song she has the CD but she is totally band from watching any video clips unless I have watched them on youtube first!

Miley is Hannah, The hannah movie was only realeased last year so she has not moved away from that and Hannah is everywhere when it comes to marketing. it is NOT fair to create Hannah for girls and than give them this!!

Why must parents fight everything to keep our little girls as kids???

  5. Well….after watching that clip….My 10 year old daughter and I are going to have to sit down and I am going to make this a teachable moment in her life. She idolises Hannah/Miley………This coming hot off her last wholesome Disney image movie makes it really hard for parents! What is happening to our girls? (sic)

  6. I can’t believe how hollow the pro-arguments are on these issues. ‘Grown up’ does not equal ‘prepared to prance around semi-naked’. If anything, videos like this show Miley’s immaturity. Her developing physical maturity is on display for all to see but that fact alone shows a lack of mature decision-making, little thought for the consequences of one’s actions and a real confusion over personal identity as she’s trying so hard to change herself to suit other people’s perceived expectations.

  7. As I was called up on this in another thread, I’ll add my thinking:

Miley Cyrus is an actor and entertainer. It is unreasonable to expect her (or any other actor) to maintain the same image they had for the rest of their lives. An actor plays a role, they are separate from the characters they play. A really great actor can make you forget any other roles they’ve played and make you believe they are an entirely different person.

In this case we have a maturing child actor who played a very family friendly role as a minor. This is certainly not something she could maintain if she wanted to make acting a life long career. Miley Cyrus at 60 still playing Hannah Montana is unrealistic. In order to expand herself as an actor, she is going to have to try many different characters. Some of these will almost certainly not be child friendly. I don’t think that takes anything away from the work she’s already done. I do think it is unfair to force her to be Hannah Montana for the rest of her life. Not only is that a fictional character who is completely separate from Miley, but it dramatically limits her future roles.

All that said, I’m not sure this music video or posing for men’s magazines is the ideal way for her to do that. (Partly because I can’t stand auto-tuned music). Past experience, however, has shown that it is the fastest way to shed a family friendly typecast. That the quickest way for her to be cast in stretching and more satisfying roles requires her to strip off is the sad state of society and movie studios. I think, however, that we help contribute to it by reacting so negatively when celebrities break the image they’ve previously had.

I think the ideal situation would be when actors do not have to radically shatter their image to get more challenging roles. That this is something that largely affects female actors (and requires nudity) is particularly concerning. It certainly isn’t a uniquely female problem however, consider Daniel Radcliffe and the stage production with horses, or Heath Ledger and his role in Brokeback Mountain.

  8. Melinda,

Thankyou so much for fighting against an over-sexualised society!

Many things you say resonates so strongly within me as absolute truth – the ways that our culture views women makes me feel trapped sometimes, and it can be frustratingly difficult to articulate this!

Thankyou for being a voice for women who have had enough of being conceived solely as sex objects, and helping us learn how to take a stand in this fight.

    Louise 🙂
