The things girls tell me: 14-year-old girls bare their hearts in video

The heartbreaking realities of dealing with sexist treatment every day

I’ve been documenting the experiences of girls everywhere I travel. I write down what they tell me (for example, as documented in this piece ‘Growing up in Pornland: Girls have had it with porn conditioned boys’ published by the ABC). Increasingly, with their permission, I’m recording their experiences. The stories they tell me are harrowing, heartbreaking – and getting worse younger.

Bella, Sienna and Ruby are only 14. Listen to what they have endured and continue to endure, at the hands of boys whose sexual templates are being shaped by pornography. They have been so terribly harmed. But you will see that by the end of the interview, they declare that they will stand up for themselves and not put up with bad behaviour from now on. As you can imagine, this response makes it all worthwhile!

And here’s why one school principal decided her students needed to hear my message

Principal of St John Fisher College Brisbane, Cathy Galvin, spoke with me when I visited her school recently, about why we need to equip girls to stand up to a toxic culture which is making them ill.

If you would like me to deliver my new talk ‘Navigating Porn Culture’ to your students, teachers and parents, please take a look at my updated speaking brochure which you can find here.

One Response

  1. Thanks Melinda for empowering our young women! This interview is great, you can see the relief and joy in their eyes, at knowing they can decide for themselves, they have permission to resist. They should not need it but in this brutal culture they do!
